8 steps to Chemex Brewing: A Complete Guide for you and Gen Z to make better coffee

Chemex brewing is a popular method of making coffee that produces a clean, smooth, and a great cup of coffee. If you are a millennial or Gen Z looking to up your coffee game, then mastering the art of Chemex brewing is a must. But before you read this here is a brief history. In the early 1940s, a German inventor and chemist named Peter Schlumbohm made the decision to invent and patent a coffee filtering device in New York. This device was designed to be used for the preparation of coffee. Schlumbohm’s invention was a success, and it went on to become a popular tool in the coffee-making industry. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

What You’ll Need

Chemex coffee maker

Chemex filter

Freshly roasted Kwararafa Light Roasted Coffee

Coffee grinder (when you have our Kwararafa Light Roast you don’t need it.)

Scale

Timer

Hot water kettle

Step 1: Preheat the Chemex

Boil water in a kettle and pour some hot water into the Chemex to preheat it. Discard the water and place the Chemex on the scale.

Step 2: Grind the Coffee Beans

Weigh out 30 grams of coffee beans and grind them to a medium-fine consistency or you can directly use our Kwararafa Light Roasted Coffee.

Step 3: Wet the Filter

Place the filter in the Chemex and wet it with hot water. This will remove any paper taste and preheat the Chemex.

Step 4: Add Coffee Grounds

Add the coffee grounds to the filter and level them out.

Step 5: Bloom the Coffee

Pour hot water over the coffee grounds, just enough to wet them. Wait for 30 seconds to allow the coffee to bloom and release any trapped gasses.

Step 6: Pour the Remaining Water

Slowly pour the remaining hot water in a circular motion over the coffee grounds, starting from the center and moving outwards. Make sure to pour the water evenly to avoid over-extraction.

Step 7: Let It Brew

Wait for the coffee to brew. This should take around 3-4 minutes. You can use a timer to make sure you get the timing right.

Step 8: Enjoy Your Coffee

Once the coffee has finished brewing, discard the filter and pour your freshly brewed coffee into your mug. Enjoy the smooth taste of your Chemex-brewed coffee.

Conclusion

Chemex brewing is an art that requires practice and patience. With the right equipment and technique, you can brew a delicious cup of coffee that will rival that of any coffee shop.
